New computer options

Looking at 2 different Dell machines.

I'd say if the wallet permits it, neither of those would be a bad rig to buy; though you might be paying a slight premium - granted most cases like this you get some decent insurance for cheap to come along with it which could be helpful in the long run. You never know when you might get a DOA/Short Term part that just happens to crap out after a week. Thankfully that's never happened to me outright.

The only other thing I can tell you is I'd maybe even consider looking into some top-of-the-line AMD builds.

The most recent CPU, and GFX parts they've released are averaging better, and even in a lot of cases; beating Intel/Nvidia. Specifically the CPU (AMD's Ryzen 9 3900X) beats Intels newest lineup in Single, and Multi-Core performances.

I'm not as keen on the info with AMD's new GFX vs. Nvidia but, I know for sure AMD has pulled at least an ~80% lead in performance tests.

My current build is:
Ryzen 7 2700X (Paired with the X470 MOBO Socket [ASRock board name that slips my mind])
Nvidia GTX 1070 SC
16GB 3000Mhz RAM
250GB M.2 SSD
1TB 7200 RPM HDD

I went with Nvidia for graphics, purely because AMD simply hadn't caught up yet, and still hadn't until about a year into owning this build.
Everything else had AMD in mind; with hopes that Team Red would pull ahead. And they have lol.

Probably good enough as shit usually happens sooner rather than later.

These are easier to get. I just have to log in and click Add to cart. 
The second one has a bit better graphics card. And it looks cooler.

You're probably right but I'd like to future proof a little. I am thinking of using my camera more now that I have time and possibly video so that eding software doesn't complain.  :-)
A newer monitor is also in the cards for those.

Seems like an easy decision between those 2 the g5 has a better processor, the gpu is a $250 upgrade on xps (not sure what they are giving u ) g5 has a ssd main drive with a large optical drive for storage (xps optical drive only ) .
The price difference on the cpu,s alone make up most of the cost difference i5 - 239 , i3 - 109 ( from tigerdirect.ca ) . Unfortunately they never tell you what motherboards they use to see how much u can add or upgrade and wish they wouldn't minimize the psu , g5 has a 360w  a micro atx at idle can consumes 90w ( under load 195) , cpu 75w and gpu 65w pushes its limits .

512 min on ssd, 1 TB better, you can upgrade that later, after market is dirt cheap compared to a few years back

graphics card........nvidia 2080 min, would serve you well for sometime to come, no need for ti version

I7 is a need, skip the I5's, 9700 should be good for the next 4 to 6 years..........cpu power isn't jumping up in scale like it used to thankfully


monitor? i purposefully bought a 1080 with high refresh because it feels better in games, if it wasn't for that i would have went for a 4k:)

i updated to a 1080 graphics card when they launched......and also upgraded to a samsung 850 pro ssd when they launched


it runs everything maxed out fine........but i'm running 1080


my point is to spend they extra upfront for your main parts......along the way you can upgrade your graphics card to jump any hurdles

All in all - as these guys have definitely made pretty clear

Getting an i7 from within this last year will be best so you're covered there..

As Mike put it, graphics cards are pretty much tapped out right now with the exceptions of little 'add-on' features like G-Sync/Free-Sync and "Ray Tracing" which is some fancy stuff even I don't really worry about..
Although, ray tracing if I'm not mistaken; will be a feature with getting a 2k series Nvidia card.. I'd look into that, there are some games that really benefit with immersion when Ray Tracing is enabled.

Check-list:
i7 9k series  (top dawg for Intels consumer lineup so, good shit there)

2000 Series GFX of any kind from Nvidia will be otherworldly compared to hardware you've probably been using for a good bit...

16GB RAM or better is a definite must; and from the builds you sent, having 32 will be more than enough for any applications you might put to use.

M.2 SSD (250-512GB for OS, and Main played games) << This will knock your socks off, and probably will be the most noticeable improvement. Even with a little age, my M.2 SSD (Samsung 960 EVO I think) is still lightning fast; Boot up time has to be sub-10 Seconds for sure. I'd say from Button press to login screen, about 8-9 seconds.

Storage should always be 1TB or more, especially with you mentioning getting some editing going. If possible, just opt-in for a 7200RPM model for the best performance. I still use my HDD for games since my SSD is only 250GB, and it all works out just fine. Slower startup, and load times..but I'm in no hurry when I'm trying to relax.

As for a monitor - I was a HUGE fan of this one when I had it (life issues, had to sell) .. CURVED 81cm (32in) Screen, 1080p, 1ms Response Time, and modes for 120, 144, and 165Hz refresh rates. I used the 144 most often for stability, but since you'll have a 2080 or similar, 165 will literally spoil you, and you'll never go back below 120hz.

Everything else in a PC past this point is just bonuses so, hopefully we've not convoluted the subject too much. Let us know what you pick!

I usually don't buy built systems, because they all have some weak areas. Our server is a Dell XPS I inherited from somebody who was throwing it out. It was dead. Why? More RAM was added (it has room for it) and the power supply wasn't up for it. Note, this is an i5 with a 135 watt power supply. 135 watts for the ENTIRE system. ridiculous. And you can't buy a third party unit to replace it, because it won't fit in there, and I bet the cables are proprietary. They all learned from Apple to sell planned obsolescence.

Anyway, if I were to buy a over the counter built system today, it would have to have the following minimum specs

AMD third generation Ryzen CPU (more bang for the buck than any comparable Intel - Ryzen 5 3600x is about as good a value as it gets, but the system will cost you a grand or more with everything else. The )
Nvidia GTX 1660TI or the new 1650 Super or whatever it's called (again bang for buck. See here https://www.anandtech.com/show/15041/nvidia-announces-geforce-gtx-1650-super-launching-november-22nd).

If there's no Ryzen with NVidia cards out there, then find the best bang for buck AMD card, as there are some that are very comparable, I am just not literate on their models.


I've been looking at upgrading for a while now, but I think I'll wait another half year or so. The prices on CPUs will continue to tumble as Intel is now looking at stiff competition. things are also getting much faster with each generation. Motherboards for the new Ryzen platform are still a bit expensive with mostly high end boards out there, but that will change soon. That's when I'll grab a middle of the pack board and decent CPU, get 32GB of RAM and a good 1650 or 1660 class GPU. The rest is just SSDs on the motherboard and mass storage. A grand will build a killer system. From Dell, that same performance will cost 1500 or more, I bet and it'll come with an anemic power supply in a tiny case.

Just wait until you boot that sucker up; having that 1TB M.2 SSD will be PC life changing. Also, considering it's 1TB. I'd definitely be utilizing a good portion of that space and speed for my favorite games. YUGE difference in performance. You won't regret the purchase, I'm sure.
